Britons admit ignoring global green issues

A shock survey has revealed nearly half of Britons don't believe green issues are genuine and only a quarter would be willing to pay more for a greener way of life.

The poll of over 5,000 Brits found, released today by Callcredit Information Group, has revealed that almost half (46 per cent) of people in the UK don’t actually believe that green issues are genuine, with a further 40 per cent claiming that they are overstated by the media.

And when it comes to making a difference to the environment, it seems many aren’t convinced that they can. More than half (56 per cent) believe that any actions they take personally won’t make a difference and a third (36 per cent) are convinced that whatever the UK does as a nation won’t have an impact on a global scale.

The study also found that the UK’s Eco movement is struggling as a result of the recession, with 62 per cent of Brits stating that they would consider doing more to help if they could afford to. Currently only one quarter (26 per cent) of Brits are willing to pay more for green clothes and cars and one third (33 per cent) will pay more for green or organic groceries.

More than 5,000 people were asked about their green and ethical attitudes and actions as part of the survey which forms part of Callcredit Information Groups’ ‘Green & Ethical’ segmentation. A unique classification tool that has been built to segment consumers based on behaviours and attitudes towards green and ethical issues at a local, national and global scale.

Chris Savage Managing Director, Callcredit Marketing Solutions said: “The purpose of this data is to demonstrate to marketers the wide range of beliefs and opinions held by individuals on the subject of green and ethical living and the effect they have on consumer behaviour and purchasing decisions. The issue of the environment and ethical living is clearly a topic that continues to divide many.

"Whilst some choose to embrace this fully and live a green life, others are more sceptical paying little attention to the global environmental and ethical issues that are taking place around us.”
