Weather experts have today warned another huge hurricane is in the making and fear it is on course to batter the Caribbean and the United States.

Tropical Depression 12, which will be known as Hurricane Katia, is currently south of the Cape Verde islands, and is predicted to start heading west across the Atlantic as it builds up power.

The US National Hurricane Centre said it is likely the massive weather system will be upgraded to Tropical Storm status today and it is expected to be classified as a hurricane by Thursday morning.

It is forecast to reach the Caribbean region next weekend.

Storm forecasters spotted the new system over the weekend and it looks likely to be as big - if not bigger - than Hurricane Irene, which blasted through the US East Coast over the weekend.

The NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said it is expecting an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic this year.

The outlook calls for 14 to 19 named storms, with seven to ten becoming hurricanes and three to five expected to become a major hurricane (category 3 or higher).

According to the NHC, there are no other low pressure systems currently threatening land.
