RBS faces a summer of action

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has become the sole summer target of climate change campaigners after being accused of financing “global polluters".

The bank faces a series of protests after activists vowed to target its annual general meeting, its Edinburgh HQ, high street branches as well as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which RBS sponsors.

Thousands of protesters, who in previous years have targeted Heathrow Airport, the Drax and Kingsnorth power stations and the City of London are set to take action against the bailed-out bank following a summit in Lewes, East Sussex, earlier this month.

The Camp for Climate Action says it wants to highlight the taxpayer-backed bank's role in a series of investments that they say is damaging the environment.

In particular, they point out the RBS heavily supports the exploitation of "tar sands", a particularly carbon-intensive form of oil being extracted in Canada.

Under the campaign banner of “stop investment in fossil fuels”, the group will also encourage students to boycott RBS accounts.

Camp for Climate Action spokeswoman Sonia Tiller said: "The Government refuses to do anything to prevent RBS from pouring billions of taxpayers' money into incredibly destructive fossil fuel projects around the world.

"So it's up to ordinary people to come together again and stop these climate crimes being committed, just like we did at Kingsnorth and Heathrow."
