Areas of the UK airspace have been closed tonight as fresh, high-density concentrations of volcanic dust threaten flights.

The shutdown was ordered after new Met Office forecasts predicted dangerous levels of ash fall-out drifting across UK skies.

The latest disruption is expected to last until the middle of next week.

A statement released on Saturday at 23.45 by the National Air Traffic Services (NATS), stated: “A high density volcanic ash cloud is rapidly encroaching on Northern Ireland.

“As a result, a no-fly zone has been imposed by the CAA in airspace over parts of Northern Ireland, however Belfast International and Dublin airports will remain open, from 0100 (local) to 0700 on Sunday 16 May.”

Earlier tonight the Met Office revealed the new ash cloud could extend across other areas of the UK, including London's airports - details at: http://bit.ly/9302FH.
