Student flats, mid-terraced housing and Victorian homes were named among the most energy efficient buildings in the country, following a research exercise by the University of Sheffield and energy company E-ON.

Working with the University’s Building Environments Analysis Unit (BEAU), E.ON has ranked the most popular types of UK properties according to their energy efficiency and graded real-life streets from A* to G.

Great Bow Yard , a modest terraced street in Langport, Somerset won the top spot by receiving the UK’s only A*, with other examples of energy efficient streets being found in Lancaster, Peterborough, Bradford and Sheffield.

The research coincides with the launch of E.ON’s free ‘Energy Fit Starter Pack’ which is designed to help customers understand their home electricity usage and save energy and money by viewing their electricity use instantly, as well as track how much they are spending daily and monthly.

Dr Hasim Altan, a Lecturer in Sustainable Living at the University of Sheffield’s Building Energy Analysis Unit (BEAU), worked with E.ON to rank typical housing types and twin them with UK addresses according to their green credentials.

He said: “Some properties are naturally more energy efficient than others. However, by making a few small changes – be they behavioural or physical – customers could find themselves on the right track to up their grades.”

Emma Thompson from E.ON, said: “It’s exam time at the moment and many students will be waiting for their results in the summer, so we thought we’d put homes to the test and show how different properties rank according to energy efficiency.

“But energy efficiency isn’t just about your house type, so we’re encouraging people to go online and find out for themselves just how much energy they’re using. Once armed with this information, we can all take the necessary steps to cut our usage, lower our energy bills and get ‘energy fit’.”
