London has come bottom of the national recycling league as new nationwide statistics reveal only a slight rise in the amount England's households are now recycling.

The capital flunked with just 31.8 per cent of household waste being sent for recycling, composting and reuse where the East region topped the table with a recycle rate of 46.1 per cent.

According to the statistics, compiled by WasteDataFlow and released by Defra, the average proportion of household waste sent for recycling, composting or reuse in 2009/10 in England was 39.7 per cent, increasing from 37.6 per cent in 2008/09.

The generation of household waste continued to decrease between 2008/09 to 2009/10, with a 2.7 per cent reduction to 23.7 million tonnes in 2009/10. Household waste generation has been decreasing annually since 2006/07.

The weight of household waste generated in 2009/10 in England, in kilograms per household, was 1036 kg per household. 411 kg of that was recycled, composted or reused whilst 625 kg was not.

The amount of household waste generated per person per year in kilograms in 2009/10 was 457 kg, of which 181 kg was recycled and 275 kg was not recycled. This continues the trend since 1983 when records began of recycling per person increasing year on year, however, total household waste generated per person has only been falling year on year since 2006/07.

The tonnage of municipal waste being sent to landfill by Local Authorities has decreased by 9.4 per cent from 2008/09 to 12.5 million tonnes. This continues the decrease of tonnes sent to landfill since 2002/03.
