Environment Minister Jane Kennedy is to leave the government as prime minister Gordon Brown carries out a reshuffle of junior ministers.

It is not yet offically clear whether she has resigned or been removed. The Liverpool Wavertree MP, a highly popular politician across all parties, quit as a health minister in 2006 over NHS reforms.

Kennedy, who was the Minister for Farming and the Environment, told Sky News the Prime Minister had asked her personally to pledge her loyalty to him.

When she said she was unable to, he asked her to leave and become the eighth minister to leave the Government in the last week.

Her departure puts further pressure on Gordon Brown following disastrous results for Labour in the election to the European Parliament.

His party was beaten into third place by the Conservatives and UKIP.
