European airports are to launch a new carbon measuring scheme next week with the aim of reducing the impact of their operations on the environment.
The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme will be the first international and independently-verified certification scheme for the measuring, reporting and reducing of carbon emissions from airport operations.
The institutionally-endorsed system will be launched next Monday at the start of the three-day annual assembly of the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, being held at Manchester Airport.
The accreditation programme follows up on a landmark resolution at last year’s event in Paris, when airports committed to reducing their carbon emissions with the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality.
The scheme focuses on CO2 emissions from all airport operations and features a staged approach and a means of verifying progress. The scheme framework is comprised of a number of levels including measurement and inventory, reductions of emissions, influencing sources outside of the direct control of the airports, and ultimately offsetting outstanding emissions to achieve carbon neutral status.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI Europe, said: “Given its long standing commitment on environmental issues, it is only fitting that our annual assembly and congress is hosted this year by the Manchester Airport Group, especially as this will see the launch of Airport Carbon Accreditation.
“This landmark initiative is a shift from airports focusing on purely local environmental impact through individual action to global impact through collective action. The fact that we are launching it in the midst of the current crisis only reflects the strength of the European airport community’s commitment to sustainability.”
