The UK's current sub-zero weather conditions are likely to worsen as the Met Office increases the warning level of its existing Cold Weather Alert.
Forecasters have increased the alert to an Amber Level 3 warning until Tuesday, when milder conditions are expected to return.
The temperatures in the UK are expected to hover around minus 4C through the rest of Sunday and Monday, while in Moscow the temperatures are minus 2C.
An intense area of high pressure has stalled over the UK leading to a break in stormy conditions but resulting in bitterly cold nights.
Elsewhere in Europe, huge snowstorms are causing chaos and disruption and wind storms are battering northern regions.
Despite more milder weather heading towards the UK on Tuesday and Wednesday, the outlook for the rest of the month is below-average temperatures accompanied by wintry showers.
Today's Level 3 Cold Weather Alert, which affects central and northern areas of England, states: “There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather between 1000 on Sunday and 1100 on Tuesday in parts of England.
“This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.
“After two more cold, frosty nights across much of England, especially central and northern parts, the cold weather looks like giving way to milder conditions during Tuesday. Generally very mild weather is then expected in all regions by Wednesday.”
