CPS to make Huhne decision

The Crown Prosecution Service has tonight confirmed receiving the critical evidence it said it needed to make a decision on whether to bring criminal charges against Energy Secretary Chris Huhne.

In a brief message on the CPS Twitter feed, prosecutors confirmed: “Material in Huhne case received from Essex Police. Decision expected within weeks.”

Detectives received vital new evidence yesterday after The Sunday Times agreed last week to hand over a series of emails.

In a statement, Essex Police confirmed: "We have shared the material we received with the CPS and officers will meet with them to discuss this in the next few days as we said we would."

If the CPS do decide there is enough evidence to charge Huhne with speeding fine offences it is thought unlikely he could remain in his Cabinet position while facing the very real risk of a custodial sentence if found guilty.

Industry minister Ed Davey is the leading contender to replace Huhne and maintain the quota of Lib Dem Ministers in the Coalition Cabinet.
