The Government's climate change watchdog spent nearly £65,000 on new offices but not a penny on research and development, its first set of accounts has revealed.
Since its creation last November, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has spent over £1 million with chair Lord Adair Turner being paid £1,000 a day for his services.
The statutory body is funded by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and is tasked with the role of advising on setting and meeting carbon budgets with the aim of building a low-carbon economy.
According to the first annual report, released today: “The CCC is a world first, an independent organisation which holds the UK government to account in the pledges it makes to reduce emissions.”
The annual report shows the CCC currently employs 22 full-time staff, including economists and scientists, and paid out £313,275 in consultancy fees in just four months.
An additional £58,000 of funding from the public purse was spent on “corporate identity and set up”.
