A global environmental organisation has joined the campaign for the introduction of a .eco (Dot Eco) domain.
Green Cross International has pledged its support to Big Room, a Canadian company hoping to submit an application for the Dot Eco domain to be introduced.
The organisation that oversees the internet, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), is planning to introduce a new range of extensions at the end of web addresses. Big Room hopes to provide Dot Eco web addresses for non-profit organisations that wish to showcase their green values.
Big Room's vision for .eco is to allocate a percentage of revenues (not profits) to organisations around the world. The organisations who will benefit from these revenues will be decided at a later date.
Green Cross International, which has organisations in more than 30 countries, is the latest company to join the group of environmental charities and businesses supporting the campaign.
"The Dot Eco initiative is to help implement good sustainable intentions,” said Adam Koniuszewski, Chief Operating Officer of Green Cross International. "I hope that the support of organisations like ours will ensure that Dot Eco is trustworthy and dedicated to preserving nature."
Big Room will submit the application for .eco domains when the application round opens in 2010.
Jacob Malthouse, co-founder of Big Room Inc, said: "The support by Green Cross International adds to the weight of voices in favour of our initiative.
“A major systemic shift to a low-carbon economy has already started. Monitoring this change in a reliable way is our goal. We are glad to have Green Cross join our Stakeholder Council."
