Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver will premiere the world’s first carbon-neutral TV travel series tonight.
Jamie’s American Roadtrip has offset the estimated 242.6 tonnes of CO2 from the TV series, according to environmental carbon-calculating experts Best Foot Forward.
Oliver worked alongside the Green Party to offset emissions from land travel, hotels and flights used during the eight-month trip across America.
Environmental projects in Asia benefitted from the offsetting, including solar power schemes in India, wind power in China and energy-efficient stoves in Cambodia.
The series airs tonight on Channel 4 and the chef has promised further TV series will continue to be green.
He said: “My company is serious about helping to prevent the dangers of climate change and we recognise that, with everything we do, but especially with TV programmes like this one, we create a carbon footprint.”
Oliver achieved fame in the UK for starting a campaign to revamp the school dinners system to include healthier options for children. Now he hopes his company, Jamie Oliver Limited (JOL) can lead the way in offsetting carbon emissions.
He added: “I felt that, as a programme-maker, it was my duty really to stand up and say that, if we’re going to shoot these brilliant programmes, which involve flying quite a few people everywhere, we should make a difference and help save the planet.”
