London council launches pay per emission car parking

Residents on Camden’s housing estates will be charged for their parking permits based on how much CO2 their vehicle emits.

The changes mean cheaper residents’ parking permits for low emission vehicles and higher charges for vehicles that emit the highest levels of CO2.

According to the council, since it was announced in August that emissions-based parking would be introduced, feedback from residents has been positive.

The measures are part of a broader package of green transport initiatives already adopted on Camden’s housing estates. This includes the introduction of bicycle storage facilities and car clubs for residents on some estates.

Councillor James King, Executive Member for Housing Services said: “This initiative marks a greener approach to charges for parking permits on housing estates. Linking the charge to the carbon emitted by the vehicle will prompt residents to think about the cars they buy and the impact it has on the environment.

“The effects of climate change are very real. The new parking permit scheme can help to drive a change in behaviour and encourage motorists to take account of environmental issues such as climate change and air quality.”

The changes to the charges for parking spaces on Council estates are similar to the Council’s emissions based scheme for ‘on-street parking’, which came into effect on 1st August 2007.
