CRC introduction sparks surge for smart meters

IMServ, a leading carbon and energy consultancy and part of Invensys Operation Management, is reporting a massive surge in demand for non half hourly automated meters (AMRs) as firms scramble to be ready for the new Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) legislation that comes in to effect at the end of March.

In an average month, IMServ installs around 3,500 smart meters as part of it’s Business SMART service. However, this month it currently has more than 7,000 units planned for installation and it has already taken orders for a further 6,000 units in April.

As a result, IMServ has had to recruit ten more office staff to manage the number of orders and it has up to 100 technicians working round the clock, seven days a week to match the demand.

The CRC refers to imminent legislation to provide organisations in the public and private sectors with an incentive to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions.

IMServ say AMRs are a critical element in enabling firms to accurately measure and monitor their energy consumption in real-time rather than relying on estimates.

The CRC legislation requires qualified organisations to:

• Measure and monitor their energy consumption;

• Calculate the organisation’s carbon emissions;

• Buy allowances per tonne of CO2 their organisation is responsible for;

• Form part of a league table that will rank organisations in terms of how well they manage to reduce their carbon emissions

Steve Brown, Managing Director, IMServ commented on the growth: “This huge surge in demand for IMServ’s Business SMART service is in direct response to the CRC legislation and we expect this level of demand will continue into October this year.

“The penny has finally dropped with many businesses now realising that they need to step up to the plate and take this legislation seriously. If they don’t act now, companies could face large fines not to mention the knock on effect that poor performance in the league tables will have on their corporate reputation.

“As a result the phone is ringing continually with orders from companies who all want to implement smart meter roll outs as soon as possible. Fortunately, we predicted this might happen so our supply chain was in place to deal with larger volumes of smart meters.

“But companies needn’t worry if they haven’t started their smart meter installations yet, there is still time.

“We know how to manage installations so they don’t need to be overly complex; we work in partnership with our clients so the planning and implementation of smart meter installations runs smoothly.

“In addition, we help our customers to manage the data that these smart meters generate so they can access the information they need quickly and easily and in a format they can understand.”

IMServ has been a leader in the industry since 1992 and is already the formal Half Hourly Data Collector for almost 50% of the UK’s half hourly meters.

In addition, IMServ also offers complete end-to-end outsourced solutions as well as individual services across three key areas – Data, Insight and Carbon & Energy saving – to help organisations including Boots, ASDA and the Arcadia Group save energy, reduce costs, control carbon and be greener.
