A unique initiative has been launched by Sony and Forum for the Future to explore the kind of world we'll be living in by 2025 – and how technological advances will help shape it.
The FutureScapes project brings together a range of expert thinkers, designers, futurologists, writers and the public to explore the opportunities and challenges of life in 2025, and to consider the potential contribution that technology and entertainment can make in shaping a better, more sustainable future.
In the wake of current rapid evolution, envisaging what might happen in the next 13 years requires practical foresight, as well as brilliant imagination – and this is exactly the task of the FutureScapes project.
The goal of the collaboration between Sony and Forum for the Future is to stimulate creative thinking around just how different our future will be. Not through wild and random imaginings, but informed by the technological changes and cultural shifts that are already underway today.
FutureScapes is all about picturing what the world of 2025 will look like and the role technology could play in everybody's lives.
To provide a starting point to spark creative thought, the project has come up with four different scenarios of the world its population may be confronted with in 2025. These aren't predictions of the future, but are intended to help visualise the possibilities for the future and think about how the world can start planning for those possibilities now.
The scenarios are a result of an open and collaborative process involving people across Sony and Forum for the Future, as well as leading futurologists and experts from a range of fields.
