Public transport company Stagecoach is to introduce a new web service that allows their passengers and commuters to calculate and cut their carbon footprint.
The Stagecoach site will allow over 2.5 million customers who use the group's bus, coach, tram and train services every day easy access to information to plan their journey's more effectively.
The site also features a sophisticated carbon calculator, which draws on information from a basket of constantly updated emissions factors, to allow customers to compare their carbon footprint by bus, train and car.
UK managed hosting provider iomart will host the new web portal for travel company Stagecoach Group, which aims to help commuters cut their carbon footprint.
Steve Stewart, director of corporate communications at Stagecoach Group, said: “Our new web portal is a key part of our drive to encourage greener, smarter travel and help people reduce their carbon footprint, and we expect the site to generate a high volume of users.
“iomart hosting’s own commitment to good environmental management and our experience of their flexible and reliable service was a significant factor in our decision.”
Angus MacSween, chief executive of iomart, said: “Stagecoach is a high-profile organisation so we’re very pleased to have been selected to provide hosting services for its new website.
“iomart hosting is committed to integrating realistic and energy efficient stewardship into every aspect of our business, particularly our four UK data centres, for the benefits of our clients, so this is a good fit.
“We are pro-actively seeking to reduce cost at every opportunity: the cost of power, cost to the environment and cost of overall service. Data centres consume large amounts of energy so we’re constantly looking for new ways to cut our own carbon emissions. It is therefore very pleasing and gratifying to be working with a likeminded organisation like Stagecoach.”
